Beginning immediately, students at Villa Maria College can participate in College-sponsored eSports, a competitive gaming league in which students form teams and compete against other colleges and universities. The College is now actively recruiting new students to join the eSports program and is offering scholarships for those interested in gaming at Villa.
The student-athletes on Villa’s eSports team will practice and compete together under the guidance of the program’s advisor, DJ Schier. Schier, who also serves as the College’s director of student life, looks forward to seeing eSports grow on campus.
“Students who collaborate to play video games competitively develop important skills, like teamwork, critical thinking, decision making, and problem solving skills,” said Schier. “This comprehensive skill set benefits our students in the classroom and in the real world. We are excited to bring this opportunity to current Vikings, and to welcome new Vikings to the team in the future.”
The inaugural eSports team will select the league and games in which they compete, and other games will be added as more players are recruited to join the team.
