Villa students took home a number of the awards in the annual Don Nichols Scholarship competition for the second year in a row. Jessica Massaker ’17 won 1st place, Jessica Puskar ’16 won 3rd place, and Samantha Lonczak ’17 received an honorable mention.

The Don Nichols Scholarship competition awards promising communications students financial help for their education. For the past 17 years, students are given a thought-provoking theme that they are tasked with bringing to life. This year’s topic was gun control.

The competition is named in honor of Don Nichols, who founded the Albright Art School’s Graphic Design Department in 1950. He brought the program to UB, where he served as its head until his passing in 1987. Nichols was awarded the Alex Osborn Award for Creativity from the Art Directors/Communicators of Buffalo, along with the Chancellor’s Award for Teaching from UB.
