Students Top Memories from the 2023-2024 Academic Year

By June 27, 2024Student Life

The 2023-2024 academic year is in the rearview mirror and it, by all accounts, was one of the greatest years in College history. We asked our students to share their favorite memories from the year, and here are the most popular answers.

Villacon

Held on March 2, VillaCon is Villa Maria’s one-day gaming convention that brought gaming, cosplay, animation, film, local vendors and artists, food trucks, unique panels, and more to campus. This year’s event brought in more than 500 people, who described the College as “friendly,” “welcoming,” and “accepting.” Fun was had by all, and we look forward to the Fourth Edition of VillaCon! American Advertising Awards

AAF Buffalo hosted this year’s American Advertising Award show right here on campus. You could hardly tell, though, once they were done with their elaborate set up that included waterfalls and tubes, bears and racoons, tents and sleeping bags, and way more. Like most AAA’s, we got to celebrate a group of our outstanding graphic design students racking up awards in the student category and even more of our successful alum win in the professional category. Commencement

Commencement is always the most important day of our academic year, so it’s no surprise that students voted it onto the Top 5 list. This year began with our traditional hooding ceremony and liturgy, followed by the formal ceremony. After the stage walks and official tassel moving were complete, our newest group of alumni made their way through a receiving line the faculty who supported them throughout their journey. Families, loved ones, and friends met the grads at the bottom of iconic Main Building staircase for a champagne toast, candid photos, and lots of hugs. The day truly exemplified the Viking Spirit. Viking Fest

Vikings Fest was the perfect way to end the Spring 2024 semester. This event brought some serious fun to campus: food trucks, tattoos, lawn games, photo stations, DJ Hassan, and more. After a crazy semester, the Vikings were able to take a few deep breaths, relax, and enjoy the event alongside their classmates. Fun was had, memories were made, photos were taken – we’re already looking forward to Fall Fest. Learn more about Student Life at Villa.

Clubs

Many students indicated that their club gatherings and events were the best part of their semester. The newly formed Hip-Hop Creative Alliance held their first workshops and master classes, cheerleading returned with a vengeance, and Travel Club made its debut, bringing together students who are full of wanderlust. The Gamers Guild hosted Smash tournaments, IN (Interior Design) Club brought guests speakers (and excellent food spreads) to campus, and Photovisions traveled throughout Western New York and has the pictures to prove it. Summer is flying by, Vikings. The Fall 2024 semester begins on August 26 and there is already so much to look forward to. We’re most excited to begin construction on the Scott Bieler Center for Academic Excellence in just a few weeks. The Bieler Center will change the student experience completely, by bringing all our service providers under one roof while creating another space for students to study, collaborate, and create. And of course, it’s going to look amazing. Learn more about the Scott Bieler Center for Academic Excellence.
