Daniella Herman, a sophomore in Villa Maria’s interior design program, was awarded a $2,500 scholarship from California Closets.
The annual competition is just one example of the many practical, hands-on experiences interior design students have during their time at Villa. Students are challenged to create a realistic design space that meets a client’s specifications. Students present their work to the client, hear their feedback, and respond accordingly.
Daniella’s project, a closet in a master bedroom, was selected as the winning entry by a panel of distinguished, practicing professionals who conducted a blind review process. The following points were considered:
· Compliance with presentation requirements
· Creativity in design solution
· Evidence of universal design
· Functionality of design
· Overall aesthetics of design
· Professionalism of presentation
“My concept for the design was based on the statement, “decompress the stress,” said Herman. “I wanted to have a sanctuary to come back to after a stressful day at work; a space that is well balanced and easy to maneuver through and feels light and airy. I included a custom closet system from California Closets with a ton of different organization methods and accessories.”
As a freshman, Daniella won best in show for her rendering of a Ron Arad Well Tempered chair during the interior design display in the College’s on-campus art gallery.
