How to Prepare For Dual Enrollment Courses

Taking dual credit courses can be an exciting journey for high school students eager to get a head start on their college education. There are several benefits to dual enrollment, including the time to adjust to college coursework and earn college credits while still in high school, all for free. But to make the most of this opportunity, it’s important to prepare yourself academically and socially. Several strategies in and out of the classroom can help you succeed in any of Villa Maria College’s dual enrollment program fine arts and music courses.

Sharpen Study Habits

Because dual credit classes are technically college curricula, students should prepare themselves for projects and tests to be more difficult than what they’re used to in high school. “The courses are demanding and require students to engage at a high level,” said Ms. Stephanie Finn, Project Administrator for Curriculum Initiatives in the Buffalo Public Schools Department of Library and Curriculum Initiatives.

Before beginning your courses, plan to have a regular study schedule. Be sure to ask questions about what you’re learning, take thorough notes, and set aside time to practice, whether it be music, art, or graphic design.

Enhance Technical Skills

As mentioned, Villa’s dual enrollment program currently offers courses in fine arts, music, and graphic design. No matter what classes you take, you’ll be learning a lot of new skills in a short period of time. Understanding the technical aspects of these skills will be important. For graphic design, play around with the tools and software mentioned in class. For fine arts, explore new techniques and mediums. And for music, study up on music theory.

Participate In Class Discussions

It’s important to be an active participant in all classes. Dual credit courses are no different. Try to join in on class critiques and discussions when they come up. If you think you have something to add to the conversation, don’t be afraid to share it. The more you participate, the more you’ll improve your own ability to give and receive constructive feedback, which is especially important in the art and music fields. Practice presenting your work or ideas clearly and confidently in both writing and verbal forms.

Improve Time Management Skills

Time management is crucial when it comes to college-level courses. It’s a good idea to use a planner, calendar, or even a notes app on your phone to track assignment deadlines and big test dates. As you work through assignments, prioritize tasks to break larger projects into smaller, more manageable parts.

Start Building a Portfolio

Taking fine arts or graphic design dual credit classes is the perfect way to start creating a portfolio. If you’re planning to study these areas in college, you’re likely going to need a portfolio when you apply. So, use this as a chance to start collecting pieces you like, explain your artistic process, and discuss your personal style.

“Dual enrollment students get to visit Villa’s campus and tour the college based on the courses they are enrolled in,” Ms. Finn said. “They’ll check out art and music studios and classrooms as well as meet faculty. It’s a welcoming experience appreciated by students who haven’t had the opportunity to visit a campus or are uncertain if college is right for them.”

During these visits, students can bring their artwork and participate in an informal portfolio review. “This is usually a new experience for our students, but it’s an important aspect of art courses at the college level,” Ms. Finn shared.

Be Open to Communication and Help

Dual enrollment classes are conducted in high school classrooms by teachers accredited through the college running the program. “This creates a community of learners within a familiar environment who have relationships with their teachers. Students feel more comfortable requesting academic support,” Ms. Finn said.

Many Buffalo Public School teachers offer students before- or after-school assistance, and that includes dual enrollment classes. Don’t be afraid to ask teachers or counselors for help if you need it. That’s what they’re there for!

Have Tactics to Manage Stress

College-level courses are meant to be difficult. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed at times. However, it’s just as vital to not let those feelings discourage you. Set aside time to manage these feelings. Get a proper amount of sleep, don’t cram your schedule with too many courses, and be sure to have time to do things you enjoy stress-free outside of class. A healthy balance between academics and creative pursuits is key to avoiding burnout.
