Lloyd Mitchell, a 2014 graduate of Villa Maria College, has been featured on the Oxygen Network for a second time. Mitchell, a freelance photographer, works to cover 17 different areas in his hometown the Borough of Brooklyn. There, he is often among the first to arrive at active crime scenes, where he photographs first responders, like the New York Police Department and New York Fire Department, in action.
The piece, which can be viewed by clicking the image below, was produced in honor of Black History Month. It is centered around the dramatic images Mitchell took last summer while he was covering political protests and the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. “It is pretty incredible experience looking back on an insane 2020 while covering COVID-19, weeks of protest and breaking news,” said Mitchell. “Creating images through this interesting time allowed me to process what was happening at my own pace. I’ll never forget it.”
Still located Brooklyn, Mitchell works as a freelance photojournalist for the Canarsie Courier and Reuters. Mitchell was also featured on Oxygen in 2014 as part of the network’s miniseries, “Unsung Heroes.” Read more about his first feature here: https://www.villa.edu/creative-writing-alum-lloyd-mitchell-participates-in-unsung-heroes-a-mini-show-on-the-oxygen-network.
