The 2017-2018 academic year may be over, but the summer break doesn’t stop Villa Maria College’s students from winning awards.
Three of Villa’s graphic design students took the top 3 spots in the 2018 Don Nichols Scholarship Competition. Hosted annually by AAF Buffalo, the Don Nichols Scholarship Competition is a student communication contest that honors the memory of Don Nichols, a notable graphic design educator who passed away in 1987. This year’s contest was open to all Western New York undergraduate students studying design, writing, communications, illustration, photography, or fine arts.
The theme for this year’s contest was racial inequality. According to AAF, students were asked to submit work related to the theme of racial inequality. Submissions could represent the creator’s take on this situation, as well as their thoughts, beliefs, and opinions on what can be done to help. Students were given creative license to submit their entry as an advertisement, booklet, essay, poem, illustration, multi-media piece, photograph, or any visual medium of their choosing. Entries were judged by a panel of professionals from local advertising agency Crowley Webb.

Francesca Bubb, third place, $300
