The Bachelor of Business Administration in Sport Management Launched

Sport Management combines timeless business knowledge like finance, psychology, marketing, and sales with the trends and technologies utilized in one of the world’s largest and most dynamic industries: sports and recreation. The versatile skill set obtained through the Sport Management program’s curriculum will prepare graduates for jobs in any area of this vast industry.

AAF Buffalo’s 2024 American Advertising Awards Were Held on Campus, and Students, Staff, and Alumni Won 26 Awards

In March, AAF Buffalo transformed the Commons and the Auditorium into a campground for the ages. The decor wasn’t the only exciting thing about the night. Graphic Design students won the majority of awards in the student category, while faculty and staff received more than 20 awards combined.

Construction Began on the Bieler Center After Receiving a Lead Gift from the Scott Bieler Family Foundation 

Construction continues to progress on the Scott Bieler Center for Academic Excellence. The new state-of-the-art facility will bring together critical support services such as the library, tutoring, advising, mental health counseling, career services, the Achieve Center, and more, making them quicker and more efficient to access. The Bieler Center will open in early 2025.

The PATHS Program Graduated its First Cohort of Salesforce Trainees

In partnership with the KORP Foundation, Professional Advancement Through Hands-On Skills (PATHS) Program was launched. Through PATHS, participants were trained on Salesforce and, upon completion of the program, earned direct access to paid apprenticeships and long-term employment opportunities.

An incredible 100% of participants received at least one certification, and 50% became dually certified.

We Launched Our First Artist-in-Residence Program

We collaborated with the award-winning media arts production company Get Fokus’d Productions, led by Buffalo’s Poet Laureate Aitina Fareed-Cooke. A cohort of Digital Media gained hands-on experience working alongside the Get Fokus’d team as they developed and rolled out their digital marketing plan for their 2024 “Tales from the Porch IV: Art is a Language” series. The series ran June-August 2024.

DMC Students Created a Music Video for A.I. The Anomaly’s “Privilege”

This semester, Villa Maria College welcomed its first-ever artist-in-residence, Aitina Fareed-Cooke. As part of the program, a cohort of Digital Media and Communication students had the opportunity to work alongside Fareed-Cooke and her team at Get Fokus’d Productions as they created a music video for “Privilege,” a song written by A.I. The Anomaly. The “Privilege” music video officially premiered during the Juneteenth: Faith & Freedom event that we hosted in April.

Construction Began on the Institute for Mobility Innovation & Technology

After Senator Tim Kennedy secured $1.2 million in grant funding for the IMIT, construction began. This project is collaborative; we joined forces with Daemen University and Buffalo Rehab Group to bring a shared vision to life. The IMIT will transform the Athletic Center into a comprehensive facility that utilizes advanced technology into a physical-therapy-based clinic to provide treatment of spinal cord injuries, strokes, MS, and Parkinson’s disease, as well as sports injuries, orthopedics, and other conditions. The IMIT will open in early 2025.

The Korean War Legacy Foundation Premiered the Video our Students, Alumni, and Faculty Created

The team from Villa worked with the Korean War Legacy Foundation for an entire year to create an animated film that preserves the history of the Korean War while promoting some of its positive outcomes.

The film premiered in June. Dr. Jongwoo Han, president of the Korean War Legacy Foundation, traveled to Buffalo to see the film in person.

We Welcomed Our Largest Incoming Class in College’s 63-Year History

Villa Maria’s fall 2024 semester started off on a high note: record-breaking admissions. As the vast majority of local and national institutions continue to experience declines in enrollment, Villa Maria welcomed its largest class in the College’s 63-year history. This year’s incoming class brought 280 students to campus, bringing the total student body up to more than 615 students. All told, enrollment has increased by over 31% in just two years.

New Visiting Artist Series Launched with ‘Catalyst,’ Brought Internationally Renowned Artist Mark Dion to Campus

We kicked off our Visiting Artist Series, “Catalyst”, in September 2024. The first artist was Mark Dion, who hosted a workshop on printmaking workshop that was exclusively for our students and a lecture that was open to the community. Visual Artist Arghavan Khosravi met with senior Fine Art as they worked on their thesis projects. “Catalyst” will conclude with a visit from Contemporary Artist Summer Wheat in the fall of 2025.
