On March 6, Western New York’s most esteemed advertising professionals gathered in the Statler to celebrate their hard work at the ADDY Awards.
The ADDY Awards are the advertising industry’s largest competition and they are awarded in recognition of the creative spirit of excellence in the art of advertising. According to the Advertising Club of Buffalo, a record 500 professional and 40 student entries were received from area advertising agencies, professionals and students. They were scored by judges from New York City, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. This year’s judging panel consisted of:
- Bill Starkey — Creative Director, 1Trick
- Kelly Butler — Associate Creative Director, Freelance
- Katherine O’Brien — Associate Creative Director, Code & Theory
- John Howard — Senior Art Direction, Theory House
This year, Villa students had a particularly impressive showing, with four students winning seven awards, including Student Best of Show, one of the night’s biggest honors.

The 2016 District Two American Advertising Awards took place on April 15 & April 16, 2016. Entries were received from the states of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. At the District Two ADDYS, Villa Maria College was recognized in the following ways:
SKALD ’16 – Gold ADDY
SKALD will now be submitted to the national award competition sponsored by the American Advertising Federation.
Grace Gruarin,’16 – Silver ADDY for Fjallraven’s annual report.
Grace’s project will now be submitted to the national award competition as well.
Update — June 13, 2016
The National American Advertising Awards reception took place on June 7, 2016. Over 40,000 entries were received from each state in the US. Villa Maria College was represented in the following way:
